Sore Throat Service (5+ Years)
A sore throat is one of the most common reasons people put off seeking help, often because it is assumed it will just clear up on its own. At Hubert Figg Pharmacy, our Sore Throat Service allows patients aged 5 and over to be assessed by our pharmacist and, where clinically appropriate, treated on the spot, without the wait for a GP appointment.
What Causes a Sore Throat?
Most sore throats are caused by viral infections, such as the common cold or flu, and settle on their own within about a week. A smaller proportion are caused by bacteria, most commonly Streptococcus, sometimes referred to as strep throat, which may benefit from antibiotic treatment. Telling the two apart is not always straightforward from symptoms alone, which is why a proper assessment is helpful.
Signs to Look Out For
Certain signs can point towards a bacterial cause, though a full assessment is needed to confirm this.
| Sign | What It May Indicate |
|---|---|
| Pain or difficulty swallowing | Common with both viral and bacterial sore throats |
| White patches or pus on the tonsils | Can suggest a bacterial infection, though not always |
| Fever and swollen, tender glands in the neck | More commonly seen with bacterial sore throats |
| Absence of a cough | A cough often points towards a viral cause instead |
How Our Sore Throat Service Works
Our Sore Throat Service is delivered under NHS Pharmacy First, a service available through participating community pharmacies in England. Sore throat in patients aged 5 and over is one of the seven established Pharmacy First clinical pathways, allowing our pharmacist to assess your symptoms and, where appropriate, treat you without a prior GP appointment. Our pharmacist uses a recognised clinical scoring system, checking things like fever, swollen glands, and the appearance of the tonsils, to judge how likely a bacterial cause is and whether antibiotics are appropriate, rather than prescribing them automatically for every sore throat.
Who Can Use This Service
This service is available to patients aged 5 and over with symptoms of a sore throat. Patients with severe symptoms, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or more complex medical histories may be referred on to a GP or emergency care for further assessment.
| Service | Cost | Age Range |
|---|---|---|
| Sore Throat Assessment and Treatment (NHS Pharmacy First) | Free (NHS-funded, where clinically eligible) | 5 years and over |
What to Expect at Your Appointment
Our pharmacist will ask how long the sore throat has lasted, whether there is a fever, and whether you have noticed any other symptoms such as a cough, swollen glands, or white patches on the tonsils. They will examine your throat and use this alongside your symptoms to score how likely a bacterial cause is. Based on this, they will explain whether antibiotics are appropriate or whether self-care and pain relief are more suitable while your body fights off a viral infection.
When to Seek Urgent Help
Most sore throats settle within about a week with simple self-care. However, you should seek urgent medical attention if you or your child have difficulty breathing or swallowing, are drooling and unable to swallow saliva, have severe pain on one side of the throat only, or develop a rash alongside the sore throat, as these can be signs of a more serious condition needing immediate assessment. Further general guidance on sore throats is available from the NHS.
About the NHS Pharmacy First Service
NHS Pharmacy First allows participating community pharmacies in England to assess and manage certain common conditions, including supplying appropriate medicines where the clinical pathway allows. The seven established Pharmacy First clinical pathways cover acute ear infections in children, impetigo, infected insect bites, shingles, sinusitis, sore throat, and uncomplicated urinary tract infections in eligible women, with age and eligibility criteria applying to each. You can read more about how the NHS Pharmacy First service works, and the full service specification is published by NHS England.
